Breastfeeding is a sacred time for a mother and child. A time for just the two of you to bond, be still, and love. It is not without challenges, tears, anxiety and sleepless nights. However long your breastfeeding journey is, it should be celebrated. Let me capture this fleeting phase of motherhood so years after your last nursing session, you have a little piece of your journey to hold.

The story behind

Love By the Ounce

Hey there, mama! I’m Kelly Brown, mother of two, wife to the best man in the universe and an artisan dedicated to celebrating breastfeeding through creating beautiful keepsakes.

During my last breastfeeding journey, I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness when I thought about this being my last baby.  The thought of never being able to breastfeed again and closing this challenging chapter in my life was creating emotions that I did not feel with my first. I knew if I felt this there must be tons of other moms out there going through the same thing.  I had heard of breastmilk jewelry but felt that so many of the options were too expensive for me.  So instead of buying one, I contacted one of the first breastmilk artisans from Australia who taught me the craft so that I can now create beautiful keepsakes for generations of mamas!!

How it works

Processing

The first step in processing your milk involves heating slowly to remove all bacteria. It is then mixed with uv stabilizers to ensure that your milk retains it true color. Your milk will turn into a paste that will sit for 24 hours to completely dry.

Creating Your Stone

Once your powder is completely dry, it is ground into a fine powder substance. Your preserved milk will be mixed with jeweler’s grade resin and poured into a mold or hand poured directly into your setting. This needs to harden for 12-24 hours or in some cases UV resin is used and cures within minutes under a UV light. Once fully cured, your breastmilk stone is solid with a hardness similar to that of plastic.

Finishing Your Piece

Finally, your one-of-a-kind breastmilk stone is ready to be set into your selected piece of jewelry. In most cases, another layer of UV resin is added for extra protection. Your piece is then hand polished and wrapped up with love before getting mailed to you!
